Hotel Leeuwarden is together with Friesland the European Capital of Culture In 2018. Throughout the year, the province is home to cultural activities in the field of theater, music, art and local projects. Iepen Mienskip (open community) is the theme.
There are many events organized with the landscape as a unique decor: landscape art with Sense of Place, for example, the project of former Oerol artistic leader Joop Mulder. Sense of Place realizes artistic high-quality and eye-catching projects that enhance the experience and appreciation of the landscape of - in particular - the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Area to a larger audience.
World art can be seen at the 11Fountains; Leading foreign visual artists design a fountain for the Elf Cities in consultation with the local population. Each fountain tells the story of the city and its history, creating a long-term meeting place for the community.
One more grip from the versatile offer: an experience exhibition about Mata Hari and a unique exhibition about MC Escher; A European Youth Music Festival at the Watergate in Sneek. Sports are also included in the program: European Sport for All Games. European athletes then come together to show traditional sports like fierljeppen, skûtselsilen and keeringen, but also folk dancing, free running and wheelchair basketball.
All of Friesland looks forward to it Theatersuit Giant Steps. The internationally renowned French street show Royal de Luxe brings their iconic giants to Leeuwarden. Dolls are so big that they sometimes cross the office buildings.
