Hotel Tall Ship Races - In the summer of 2018 Harlingen again receives the world's finest tall ships with their international crew and trainees.
The Tall Ships Races Harlingen 2018 promises to be a huge event, for which many volunteers and sponsors will be committed. The ships sail into Harlingen on 3 August 2018, after the Sail In Parade, as soon as they are finished above Vlieland and Terschelling. There will be many activities in and around the port and the public will of course have the opportunity to view the ships from close up and take a look on board. There will also be many trips in and around the harbor. There is plenty of music and stalls with food and drinks.
The Tall Ships Races
The Tall Ships Races have been annual events since 1956 in which numerous tallships from all over the world take part. The event is intended to introduce young people under the 25 year to the sea and sailing on traditional ships. Half of the crew is therefore between the 15 and 25 years old.
In 1956 the first competition between 20 ships was organized by Bernard Morgan, a London lawyer. The race went from Torqua, Devon to Lisbon. The public interest turned out to be so overwhelming that the organizers set up the Sail Training International Association to organize such competitions in the following years.
In 2014 Harlingen receives the ships of the Tall Ship Race. For the first time in the history of The Tall Ships Races, a Dutch port was the starting port of this international sailing race. The large number of 337 trainees provided the Harlingen Sail Foundation with an Award for the highest number of participating trainees ever.
This year Harlingen is the finish. With the Tall Ships Races Harlingen 2018, the organization hopes to once again write history and enthuse 350 trainees to take part in the Race.
